Platform-Specific Content Tips: TikTok vs Instagram

5 min read

The same clip performs differently on TikTok and Instagram. A small amount of tailoring — not a full reshoot — makes UGC land on each.

TikTok rewards native and fast

Hook in the first second, keep it raw and authentic, and lean into trends, sounds, and on-screen text. Over-produced content reads as an ad and gets scrolled. Talk to the camera like a friend.

Instagram Reels rewards polish and shareability

Reels audiences tolerate (and reward) a more aesthetic, considered look. Optimize for saves and shares — content people want to send to a friend or come back to. Clean framing and a strong cover frame matter more here.

Get the technical basics right

Shoot 9:16 vertical, keep important visuals and text inside the safe zone (away from UI overlays), and add captions — most people watch on mute. A readable hook in text on the first frame helps on both platforms.

Repurpose smartly, don't just cross-post

Reframe the hook, swap the trending audio, and remove the other platform's watermark before reusing a video. A 60-second tweak per platform beats blindly posting the identical file everywhere.
